Nightlight Interview – David E. Whitcher
This week we interview David E. Whitcher, creator of Nitro Dice.
Welcome! Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hi, I’m David E. Whitcher originally from Adrian, MI. I now live in the village of Manchester near Ann Arbor.
What game or games have you had published?
Blue panther LLC
Rocks for $ale
Do you publish under your own design label?
I haven’t published anything new through PyroMyth Games in several years.
PMG is functioning primarily as a design studio these days but if I had
the right game I would consider self publishing again. With POD production
and Micro funding available these days it’s certainly easier to produce a
quality product than when I started.
How long have you been designing games?
When I was very young, I would make roll and move games, at that time
that’s all I knew. That evolved as my gaming tastes did going through
RPGs, War games, CCGs, and finally Euro games. I only became serious about
getting published in 2003 when I designed Cannon and received so much
praise I decided to self published it. That’s when I formed PMG.
How much time do you spend designing and playing games?
I game for pleasure about once a week with one of several gaming groups in
my area and the occasional Convention or game party. I spend much more
time on design but it’s difficult to meter the amount of time since so
much of it is done in my head. I may spend my drive into work thinking
about a solution to a problem discovered in my last playtest or have an
idea for a mechanic to think through. Rules writing, prototyping, and
testing range from 5 to 10 hours a week unless I’m on a deadline.
What types of games do you enjoy playing?
Like many people I go through phases. Currently, I’m going through a second
childhood and enjoying medium to lightweight strategy games that are thick
with theme such as the Adventurers or Legitimacy. I still play a wide
variety of other games; I think it’s important to see what other designers
are doing but at the end of the day I just want to have some fun playing a
game with some fun people.
What’s your favorite game other than one you’ve designed yourself?
For Abstract games it would be Chase. Euro games: Alhambra and for American style games Robo Rally. All very different but good.
Of your own projects, which is your favorite and why?
Lets call this one of my many favorites.
I want to see the mass market re-energized with good family games,
something it’s lacking for the most part. I designed Poltergeist Paparazzi
to be accessible to occasional gamers and at the same time be interesting
enough for the hardcore crowd.
Poltergeist Paparazzi: Tabloid reporters compete to get the best photos of
the shy ghosts at Moribund Manor. Spirit chasing board game for 2-4
players ages 10+
The theme is fun, it’s easy to learn, is light but requires planning, and
has a bluffing element to it. The mechanics are also novel enough to give
players a new experience which most mass market games fail to provide.
What keeps you motivated to design games?
The ideas which never stop coming, people smiling when they play my games,
all the great people I meet because im doing this and all the places I get
What advice would you give to aspiring game designers?
Help others. It’s easy to get caught up with your own latest greatest game
but how often have you needed testers or feedback. Others are in the same
boat and your best testers and feedback will come from other game
Do you have any upcoming projects you’d like us to know about?
Yes and no. I would love to tell you about some upcoming games but my
publisher wants to keep it quiet for now.
Anything else you’d like to say?
If anyone has more questions they can write ask(at)pyromythgames.com
Do you have a Twitter account, Blog or Facebook page you’d like to share
with your fans?
I do have a Facebook page but its for friends and family only. Fans? I’m
not sure how many people might want regular updates on what I’m doing. If
anyone out there is interested let me know, maybe I’ll start a blog.
Thank you for your time David, we wish you the best of luck and success!
